Second Step: Reviews of “A Taste of Blackberries”

The first reviews we’ll consider are from Amazon.com, a website that sells books. These reviews were written by children who read the book:

Review One:

“I liked this book. It is a sad story about how Jamie died because of bee stings. I would think that it was my fault because I should have tried to stop him from putting the stick down that hole. But why would someone put a stick down a hole? That is dumb. But I would recommend this book to a pair of friends. They should read the book together because they should remember to stay friends forever.”

As a group, answer the following questions. Write out your answers.

A) Does this review tell you much about the plot of the book? How so?

B)  Are there any suprises in the book that this review spoils? Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

C) If you had never read this book, would this review convince you to read it? Why or why not?

Review Two:

“This book was a really good book. It gave me a lot to think about. First that I am thankful for having a best friend. And also it teaches me to never forget your friends. I recommend this book for people who really care for their friends.”

F) If you had never read this book, would this review convince you to read it? Why or why not?

Comparing and Contrasting these Reviews:

G) Based on your answers to my questions so far, which of these reviews do you think is better? Why? Write a brief “review of the reviews” giving specific reasons for your answers.

H) I notice that both of these are positive reviews (the author of the review recommends that you read this book). In fact, every review on the website is positive. Considering the source of these reviews, can you see any reason why all the reviews tell you that you should read the book? Explain.
